Mass Media


Mass media refers to a part of the media specifically designed to reach a large audience. The term was coined in the 1920s with the advent of nationwide radio networks, mass-circulation newspapers and magazines. However, some types of mass media such as books and manuscripts that have already been in use for centuries.

The mass media including internet media (blogs, forums, podcasts, and video sharing) because individuals now have a way of exposure that is of comparable magnitude to that previously limited to a select group of media producers mass. The public communications has been seen by some commentators as forming a mass society with special characteristics, notably atomization or lack of social ties, which make it particularly susceptible to the influence of mass media techniques such as modern advertising and propaganda.

The term public media is less used and is defined as the media whose mission is to serve or to engage an audience.

Marshall McLuhan, one of the biggest critics of media history, has floated the idea that "the medium is the message."

The media can be used for various purposes:

Entertainment, traditionally through quality performances, music and sports, and reading light, since the late 20th century also through video and computer games.
Advocacy is used for both economic and social concerns. This can include marketing, advertising, public relations, propaganda and political communication.

Electronic media and print media:

Broadcasting: the term is used to broadcast radio and television.
Films are most often used for entertainment, but also for documentaries.
The Internet has many uses and presents both opportunities and challenges. Examples include blogs and podcasts (such as news, music, recorded voice and video)
Mobile phones that can be used for fast breaking news and short clips of entertainment like jokes, horoscopes, alerts, games, music and commercials
Publishing, including electronic publishing
Video games have evolved into a mass form of media since cutting-edge devices like the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii extended their use.
